Impossible 3×3 Cube States
Recognize a single flipped edge, a single twisted corner, or an impossible two-piece swap.
Legal turns on a correctly assembled 3×3 preserve mathematical constraints. Some visible states therefore cannot be created by normal turning.
One flipped edge
If everything is solved except one edge whose stickers are reversed, the cube was reassembled incorrectly.
One twisted corner
A legal sequence cannot twist only one corner; total corner twists must balance.
Only two pieces swapped
A single swap of two pieces is impossible on a normal 3×3 without another change.
What to do
- Make sure you did not stop halfway through an algorithm.
- Try one complete solve using the fixed centers as references.
- If the same isolated case remains, ask whether the cube was taken apart or a piece popped out.
- Correct assembly only according to the model manufacturer’s instructions.
